Location and Values: Chiribiquete National Park is located in the Amazonian region of southern Colombia. It is a vast forested wilderness punctuated by a series of table-top mountains known as tepuis. These tepuis are sheer-sided sandstone plateaux, characteristic of the Guiana Shield, that support a distinctive endemic flora and fauna. Although much of Chiribiquete’s biodiversity remains to be documented it clearly has extraordinarily high levels of species richness due to its location in a region of overlap between four major biogeographical provinces and two Pleistocene refuges. The occurrence of globally threatened species such as giant otter, giant anteater, lowland tapir, woolly monkey and jaguar provides an indication of its remarkable state of preservation and naturalness. In addition to its natural values rock shelters at the base of the tepuis have been used and decorated with rock pictographs by indigenous peoples over a period of 20,000 years, and the area is still occupied by indigenous people living in voluntary isolation.
Conservation Status and Prospects. According to IUCN’s evaluation of this recent nomination, the conservation status of Chiribiquete National Park is very good. It is in a remarkably pristine condition, mainly because of its remote, inaccessible location, but also because it is government policy to protect the indigenous people from contact with mainstream society.

They illustrate the landscape features of this outstanding place, including some of the spectacular tepuis, flooded forests and the meandering rivers of the Amazonian lowlands, as seen from the air.
